From a letter dated c. November 20, 1889:
“No matter how odious or burdensome painting may be at present, those who have chosen this profession – if only they pursue it with zeal – are dutiful, sound and faithful men. Society often renders our existence hard, and that is the source of our impotence and of the imperfection of our work. I believe that even Gauguin suffers greatly from this and cannot develop, thought he has it in him to do so.”
