Number 98 in the series talks about something that caught my eye the other day on Artnet.com.

  1. "because she likes painting." Well, that really has to be the reason why... or else, is it worth it?
    That's a great painting - I love the warmth and strength of it. I like how the figure is placed, relaxed in his chair, looking straight out at the viewer. He looks kind of challenging, but also rather enigmatic. I love how she has painted the face so delicately (a word you used too), yet quite starkly really - no "rose tints in the cheeks", but rather white and flat. Yet it is so effective. If she'd been too fussy, the figure would have just disappeared into the strong reds of the background.
    Like you, I like her use of her brush. The light and shadows are just lovely.
    I could live with that painting (and I don't say that often!)

  2. You're right, Lizzie. Looking at the face again, I also notice that she did in fact catch something of Lennon's mouth. And also, this painting looks loose and carefree, but it takes a lot of skill to paint in this way.

How to etch a linoleum block

Linoleum as a material for printmaking has been used for nearly a hundred years now. Normally, you cut an image out using special gouges similar to woodcut tools, cutting away the lino around the image you want to print. This is called relief printmaking, because if you look at the block from the side, the material that remains stands up in relief from the backing material. You then roll ink with a brayer over the surface of the block, place paper over it, and either print by hand or run it through a press. You can do complex things this way (for example, reduction linocuts), but the beauty of the process is that it is quick, simple, and direct.
